How to draw a bumble bee

Drawing a bumble bee in colored pencil is a fun way to practice texture, color layering, and simple realism. With their round bodies, fuzzy stripes, and delicate wings, bumble bees are perfect subjects for learning how to build depth using light pressure and gradual shading. In this lesson, you’ll start with a basic sketch to capture the bee’s shape, then slowly layer colored pencils to create soft fur, bold yellow-and-black patterns, and subtle highlights. By taking it step by step, you’ll see how a few simple techniques can bring your bumble bee to life on the page 🐝✨

Step One

Use a blend of black and dark brown for the fuzzy parts. Don’t forget to leave room for the highlights in the eye and keep your pencil nice and sharp for better detail.

Step Two

Pick out a warm yellow, darker orange, and brown. Use the yellow first and use short strokes to create a sense of fluffy fuzz. Then use the orange and brown to create a sense of depth. Pay attention to the direction of the light. Where is it lighter and where is it darker?

Step Three

Continue using the same methods to build up detailed layers. Be sure to use different colors so the portrait will look like it has more depth.

Step Four

When it comes to drawing under the wings, they are translucent so be sure to incorporate a little bit of yellow under there.

Step Five

The wings are a little complicated but no so bad once you understand that you don’t have to draw exactly what you see. Draw the lines with a sharp pencil first.

Step Six

Add some yellow, this is the reflection from the fuzz underneath. Add some brown and black to the lines.

Step Seven

Use white to create some highlights, just have fun with the play of light here. Make sure to keep your pencil sharp for this part as well
