Get to know me
Hi, I’m Lauren. I grew up surrounded by animals, we would have no less than 5 dogs in our house at a time. I was an introvert as a kid, I naturally gravitated towards animals, fantasy books, anything fairytale, nature, anything art related.
I played with paints for the longest time until I discovered cameras. I was that person you’d see with a camera by their side wherever they go. I loved taking pictures of people and nature the most. My dream was to become a landscape/wildlife photographer but unfortunately I chose to go to college and work a boring job.
Once I graduated college, I was burnt out! I needed a change bad. That’s when I discovered I can draw realistically using colored pencils. I had drawn realistically a little bit with graphite back in college but I was too scared to use color.
One day, I bought myself some prismacolor pencils and drew a small beetle. I fell in love with it immediately! Well, not entirely true. I struggled to get a good technique down that didn’t hurt the heck out of my hands. I also hated that I couldn’t get proportions right…
After about a year of nonstop drawing, I finally could relax into a good routine and easier techniques. I started out by getting paid to draw people’s pets, this helped me gain the confidence I needed to keep going.
As I got more confident, I started to draw more wildlife. That was my goal the whole time, to draw all animals, critters, flowers, and more. I had built up enough of an inventory that I could start selling prints of my wildlife art, this changed my whole world!!
Not only could I sell prints but I could record every method I used to create classes online. I already had the knowledge and skills using a camera that it wasn’t that hard to set up. All I needed was confidence in myself to record me talking about the methods.
I’ve learned over the years, how to instruct my students in a way that they will understand. I have taken some art classes when I was a kid and I never liked how they’d teach, it was too much of a hierarchy attitude that didn’t help me understand what I really needed to understand about realism and color theory.
So I set out to explain how colors work with colored pencils, the best techniques to use to achieve a realistic look, what tools work well, and so much more at a level that almost anyone can understand.
My goal is to help give you confidence in your drawing journey without feeling intimidated or lost. I started this journey completely lost and frustrated because I didn’t have any guidance. I taught myself all of these techniques so that now I can help you without all that hassle!
